Tips for calling HMRC

Call at 8am

HMRC opens at 8am Monday to Friday. Calling right when lines open gives you the shortest wait times.

Avoid January

January is Self Assessment deadline month — the busiest period of the year. Allow extra time or use online services.

Have your NI number and UTR ready

You will be asked to verify your identity before HMRC can discuss your account. Have your National Insurance number (from any payslip or P60) and UTR (from any HMRC letter) ready.

Request a call reference

After any call, ask the HMRC agent for a reference number. This is important if there is a dispute or follow-up query.

HMRC postal address

For most personal tax correspondence:
PAYE and Self Assessment
HM Revenue and Customs
BX9 1AS
United Kingdom

Always include your National Insurance number and/or UTR on correspondence.

Common questions

What is the HMRC income tax helpline number?

The HMRC Income Tax helpline is 0300 200 3300. Lines are open Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm. Calls from UK landlines and mobiles cost the same as a local call.

What is the best time to call HMRC to avoid waiting?

Call early morning (8am–9am) or avoid January (Self Assessment deadline month). Midweek calls (Tuesday–Thursday) tend to have shorter queues than Mondays and Fridays.

Can I sort out my tax code without calling HMRC?

Yes. Log into your Personal Tax Account at gov.uk/personal-tax-account. You can view and update your tax code, check your income sources, review past tax returns, and claim refunds — all without calling.

Is HMRC webchat available?

HMRC offers a digital assistant and sometimes live webchat on the GOV.UK website. Availability varies by service — check the relevant helpline page on GOV.UK before calling, as webchat is sometimes faster.
