How we create and maintain content

TaxHelper publishes free UK tax calculators and guides for employees, freelancers, and anyone trying to understand their payslip. This page explains our standards, sources, and correction process.

Last updated: 6 April 2026

Our mission

We explain UK payroll tax in plain English and back every calculator with published HMRC rates. We are independent — we do not sell your salary data, and we label any sponsored or affiliate recommendations clearly when they appear.

Sources we use

All rate data comes from official HMRC publications and GOV.UK guidance, including:

  • HMRC income tax rates, thresholds, and Personal Allowance figures
  • National Insurance rates and thresholds for Class 1, 2, and 4
  • Student loan repayment thresholds published by the Student Loans Company
  • Scottish income tax rates set by the Scottish Parliament

We maintain a tax-year database updated each April when new figures are published. Calculators pull live rates from this database rather than hard-coded numbers in the page source.

How guides and articles are written

Guides are written by the TaxHelper editorial team for a general audience. We prioritise practical examples with real figures, step-by-step instructions, and links to official HMRC resources. We avoid jargon where possible and explain technical terms in our glossary.

Accuracy and corrections

Tax rules change frequently. When HMRC publishes updates, we update our database and review affected guides. Each guide shows a "last updated" date. If you believe a rate or explanation is wrong, please email hello@tax-helper.co.uk with the page URL and details. We aim to investigate within two working days and publish corrections promptly.

What we are not

TaxHelper provides general information, not regulated financial or tax advice. Our tools model standard scenarios and cannot cover every individual circumstance. For complex situations — foreign income, trusts, share schemes, or disputes with HMRC — consult a qualified accountant or HMRC directly.

Advertising and funding

We may display advertising to help keep the service free. Advertising does not influence our tax calculations or editorial content. See our privacy policy and about page for more on how we fund the site.
